HAIRCUT DANCE
Disguised and reflected. Jaca’s Haircut, very straight lines, “made with the ruler”, like they say. Bent, fallen. Relic. In Rio de Janeiro, haircuts and passinho dance skills give status and prominence to those attending funk parties. And when the barbers are the dancers themselves? Haircut Dance is a dance documentary about barbers who dance or dancers who cut hair. Scissors and comb skills mark two bodies that move to the sound of carioca funk. The hair in a very straight line like “made with a ruler”, well-cut, in disguise or dyed in rascal blonde is part of the aesthetics of the periphery that is proud and affirms itself through the black culture and favela pride.
Passinho is a cultural phenomenon born in funk parties. It is a combination of traditional Brazilian rhythms, such as samba, frevo and capoeira, in which sequences of rapid feet movements predominate. The lack of rules gives the dancers the freedom to interpret and improvise their next steps, in dance and in life, expressing their desires and individuality.
