TANGLY guides crossovers and ritualizes memories of 11 trans, non-binary and queer people, disrupting everyday life, grounding universes and glimpsing healing ebós, unburdens, provocations, reflections, affections, anguish, revolts and ways of imagining futures. We explore how these configurations affect our ways of moving in the world and on stage, focused on experimenting with dance transitions and poetic auto-narratives tools. The practices shared during the creation dealt with alterations of body states as an ignition for movement research, taking the spectrum of invisibilities, desires, collectivization of individual narratives, of diving and immersion in the self and the other as starting point. We explore individual-collective movements that relate to our issues of gender transformation and its intersections with dissident masculinities, ethnoracial and territorial aspects, among others. We also navigate through drawings, calligraphies, cartographies of “domestic-specific” actions, sound and movement improvisations based on theoretical texts, explorations on presence, presentation and decomposition of organic materials, poetry, studies on drags & monsters, automatic writing and thunderstorms, rain, fire and transition-of-the-world rituals.

Built through a virtual chimera, TANGLY exposes the crisis of not only environmental and economic paradigms, but also of the paradigm of being: we are not binary, static or unique in the universe, we are complex webs in perpetual movement, in bioculturally diverse worlds and in metamorphosis. Besides powering the creation of new artistic tools, this virtual chimera had an important role: the creation of a unique interlocution network between artists from different contexts and localities in Brazil, who are often isolated and creating alone, a common reality for artists of dissident gender that not only precedes the current pandemic but is aggravated by it.

TANGLY originated in a virtual residency organized by the Centro Cultural São Paulo in February 2021 and is composed by artists living in 6 Brazilian regions who have never met otherwise than virtually – we write from Parnaíba, Teresina, Corumbá, Maceió, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, São José do Rio Pardo and São Paulo. Ê Coletive has Pol Pi as its mediator and provocateur, a Brazilian trans choreographer based in Toulouse, France. The dramaturgical web of the film was woven through virtual encounters and individual production of audio-visual materials between February and August 2021. It is not a dance performance or a documentary, but a film whose format was born from our desires to share creative and life practices. In this process, we set ourselves the challenge of questioning the audiovisual medium through our deconstructive looks, finding a way of our own of filming and being filmed, transitory like our dances and existences. Practice and process sharing was thus seen as artwork, for what interests and moves us is precisely this transitory space of reinvention that questions the very formats to which we are accustomed as validated “results” in the context of contemporary dance and performance.

We never touch each other. But we know we are in each other’s houses. We really wanted to be born. Let’s begin. You walk through the kitchen door to show the grass leaning outside at mysterious speed. We know of the smell of thunder in the air. We still can’t touch each other. There are towels dancing on clotheslines as if breathing while they smile. A backyard with a cycle full of chairs rests, inhabited by the invisible. And then, when you suddenly leave the garden and point the camera to the sky… a bird crosses the space. We know that there are many songs without a beginning or an end. We close our eyes and create another place. Someone breaks the silence. It’s just a voice. I like your hair. Each one chooses a leaf or opens a drawer. We recognize entangled possibilities. They don’t recognize us. We don’t recognize ourselves. Abyssal abysses of the other. But the microphone doesn’t switch on. Are you still there? She inquires about the legitimacy of happiness. He gets upside down. Elu beats some cards. It’s outer space travel. A drop runs down his spine. We would eat the earth. We are the other. We are you.
